The Department of Philosophy at Niger Delta University is one of the foremost centres for philosophical education and research in Nigeria’s South-South region. Established alongside the university, it has grown into a vibrant intellectual community dedicated to the relentless pursuit of wisdom and critical inquiry.
Our department offers a rich curriculum that integrates the best of the Western philosophical tradition with the unique insights of African philosophy, producing graduates who are equipped to tackle the complex challenges of the contemporary world.
We are home to the Niger Delta Journal of Philosophy (NDJOP), a peer-reviewed publication that advances philosophical scholarship from the Niger Delta and across Africa. Our faculty are actively engaged researchers, drawing on the region’s rich cultural and environmental context to produce globally relevant scholarship.

Our B.A. (Hons.) Philosophy programme provides a comprehensive grounding in the major areas of philosophical inquiry, with special emphasis on African philosophy and the unique intellectual heritage of the Niger Delta region. Graduates emerge as critical thinkers capable of engaging the world’s most pressing intellectual and ethical challenges.
A rigorous programme combining advanced coursework and original dissertation research. Students specialise in one of four thematic clusters and work closely with a faculty supervisor to produce a publishable-quality thesis.
Entry: B.A. Philosophy (minimum Second Class Lower) from a recognised university.
Our doctoral programme prepares scholars for careers in academic philosophy and advanced research. Candidates conduct original research under the close supervision of an experienced faculty member and are expected to contribute new knowledge to their chosen field.

Critical examination of religious belief, arguments for God’s existence, African traditional religion, and inter-religious dialogue.
Foundations of scientific inquiry, eco-ethics, and the philosophical dimensions of oil pollution and ecological crisis in the Niger Delta.

A peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Department of Philosophy, Niger Delta University. NDJOP publishes original research in all areas of philosophy, with particular attention to African philosophy and issues relevant to the Niger Delta and the broader African context.
